Stop Calling it “Socialism”

As a soon-to-be college graduate, I have a hard time thinking about the fall of Capitalism without getting slightly aroused.

I’m not an economist or lawmaker (yet), but when it comes to progressive politics in the United States, it isn’t hard to see that one of the biggest issues with furthering classic socialist causes such as universal healthcare and livable wages is the advertising that comes with these ideas.

The United States is a country in which Capitalism is not only king, but essentially god. As a student I’ve spent the last four years learning all of the wondrous ways in which Capitalism dehumanizes and discards people like trash. As much as I agree with this sentiment, I also really like shiny things.

As much as I can’t wait for a Socialist revolution to arrive and swallow Jeff Bezos and Elon Musk into a dark abyss, the likelihood of that happening in the United States is less than zero. In recent years however, we have seen new waves of protests calling for a plethora of various socialist actions including universal healthcare, paid maternity leave, increases to the minimum wage, and countless others. Despite congress currently being composed of a mixture of neoliberals and white supremacists, there are a handful of members such as senators Bernie Sanders and Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez who have put socialist issues back into the…
